Man O’ War interlude

On a short notice I was asked to paint a small fleet of High Elf ships for Man O’ War – a grande old Games Workshop game, that I have actually never played. With the advent of 3D printing, these relic GW games such as Man O’ War, Warmaster and Epic have seen renewed interest as various makers have begun offering 3D designs or physical models at a very reasonable price. Oh happy days!

3D printed High Elf ship. Pretty awesome.

For this job the task was simple: paint a small fleet of of High Elf ships in a tabletop standard and do it within a week. The owner also already had a suggestion for a paint scheme from another site https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1628070/

I ended up adjusting the paint scheme slightly, but really liked the use of the vibrant Talessar Blue (contrast color from GW) on the sails. I must admit that contrast colors have not exactly sparked the promised painting revolution on my paint desk, but I try to force myself to use them more often.

Paints used

  • Wraithbone spray primer
  • Airbrushed very thinned down Skeleton horde (contrast)
  • Seraphim sepia (shade) watered down and only applied to certain areas, don’t wash the entire model.
  • Bone white (vallejo) for touch up areas where shade is too strong or has made stains.
  • Snakebite Leather (contrast) for wooden deck
  • Talessar Blue (contrast) for sails, layered a thin coat of Athermatic Blue (contrast)
  • Scale 75 Elven Gold, washed with Reikland Fleshshade.
  • Assorted other paints like purple, red and yellow either GW or Vallejo.
